By Governor Governor Bob Riley has been basking in the glory of a state Supreme
Court decision earlier this month for much of the past couple of weeks That
victory tour was supposed to bring the governor to the Grand Hotel and
Conference Center in Point Clear Alabama The conference however has been
cancelled due to a scheduling conflict Riley was expected to meet with district
attorneys from around the state and discuss how they would proceed with
enforcing gambling laws in the state Many still believe those gambling laws are
murky This ruling was just one ruling in a list of cases that have connections
to video bingo machines in the state said Mark Bryman and in this ruling the
Supreme Court specifically mentioned that this was a ruling only for this
particular case of White Hall not all gambling establishments Riley had been
battling to make his stance on gambling the right one and the Supreme Court
ruling was just what the governor needed to continue his work with a gambling
task force that he set up The task force has been raiding establishments that
Riley has felt were operating illegal gambling machines The owners of these
establishments maintain that their machines are simply a more modern form of the
popular game of bingo Most of the establishments that have been raided have been
charitable operations The charities are concerned that without the gambling
halls they may see a sharp decrease in the amount of money being raised for
their causes November 23 2009 Posted By Terry Goodwin Staff Editor
