product for Apple’s Xserve that allows Windows and Linux virtual machines to run
side-by-side with the Mac OS X operating system Parallels Server for Mac Bare
Metal Edition unveiled Wednesday at the Parallels Summit 2010 in Miami is aimed
at companies wishing to standardize on Mac hardware and at cloud services
providers that want to add Mac OS X capabilities the company said The company’s
original virtualization product for Xserve allowed instances of Mac OS X Linux
or Windows to run as virtual machines on top of an OS X host With the new
product those virtual machines can all run directly on the Xserve’s hardware
with a hypervisor present to co-ordinate the different guests Read more of

AM PST So is this a type-1 hypervisor or is the Parallel implementation running
a small unix implementation Why on earth would anyone want to run Mac hadware we
have several of them where I work and the hardware is definately not
server-class Like this Reply to this comment 1 person likes this comment by
ClaBR February 26 2010 5:33 AM PST Probably because they want an Xserver
Hardware could not be an excuse as you can get much more powerful and more
reliable hardware if you get a server from Dell or HP for example Like this by

These are the old Compaq work horse but a new engineered quality Comes with the
smart array controller and Lights Out software Where warrantee is concerned out
of the box you get 333 and I have seen where I needed parts replaced and they
arrived the same day Dell also has great servers with Xeon processors but I love

February 26 2010 8:09 AM PST Great point If money is an issue go with slightly
older G4 hardware and just stock up on parts from eBay Still amazing hardware

PST This article doesn’t correspond to the product description for Parallels
Server Bare Metal edition on Parallel’s web site It is described there as a
hypervisor that will run on Intel VT-d and AMD-V compatible systems from any
vendor running Windows and Linux workloads but not OS X If you want to
virtualize OS X Server you supposedly have to do it on an Xserve running
Parallels Server for Mac which also hosts Windows and Linux VMs Like this Reply
to this comment by therealgeeves February 26 2010 7:24 AM PST Considering I get
kernel panics on my OS X quite often running basic webserver software Spinlock
Timeout anyone I’d hesitate in considering adding yet another layer to an
already buggy OS_But then again perhaps the server edition has something I am
missing or I have something the server edition is missing_I’d recommend running
freeBSD openBSD or a linux variant with no GUI for any production environment

bradrel February 26 2010 8:22 AM PST To answer some of the questions in the
comments You can only run Mac OS X Server legally on Apple branded hardware
There for if you want to run multiple copies of Mac OS X Server on 1
computer/server you need some sort of virtualization software Up to this point
there have been 4 main products to do this VMWare Fusion Parallels Desktop
Parallels Server for Mac and VirtualBox The different being the 4 that were just
mentioned all run on top of Mac OS X so you would have Apple Hardware- Mac OS X-
Virtualization Software- Virtualized Mac OS XThe new product from Parallels run
directly on the hardware So you have Apple Hardware Virtualization Software
Virtualized Mac OS X Obviously the idea being you get better performance and
management_There is more info here

Virtualization does NOT provide better performance than OS on bare metal Even
vSphere on bare metal with its tiny kernel has some small amount of overhead
Like this by bradrel February 26 2010 10:07 AM PST WhosheboobooI understand that
I was saying better performance than the other current Virtualization options
